TBN: Supercreams Edition- Neostrata Matrix Support Cream Review

Updated: Feb 26, 2020

I've written about the emerging trend of supercreams before. These are moisturisers supercharged with active ingredients that give serums a run for their money (and people who can't be bothered with too much skincare a huge sigh of relief).

I've tried several, dear readers. I'm not going to lie: they're not all great, or even good. However, I recently found an interesting one: Neostrata's Matrix Support. This not only packs a punch when it comes to skincare benefits, but also provides a high SPF.

This moisturiser protects and repairs your skin with antioxidants (pomegranate, Vitamin E, coffee arabica berry), it regenerates with retinol and boosts skin firmness with NeoGlucosamine (a patented Neostrata ingredient).

I have two reservations with this formula. The first is that using retinol in the mornings is counterintuitive for me (although the high SPF protection does put my mind at ease). I should explain that it is not the retinol itself that reacts with sunlight in some way to harm the skin, but, because it reveals new skin, it inevitably sensitises you to the sun. I would rather use retinol at night and leave it to regenerate in peace, rather than push my skin toward accelerated cell turnover during the day, when it's fighting environmental aggressors. However, this is an entirely subjective stance.

Furthermore, I am very sceptical about the firmness claims. Sagging is caused by loss of volume under the skin, hence the rise in use of cosmetic fillers for a youthful look. It is not so much due to the skin becoming loose; whatever firming effect this has, I would expect it is limited.

Do I like it? Despite the two caveats above, yes- if only for the peace of mind I get by using it. A busy day that involves walking outdoors? I don't give it a second thought. This product makes sure I return home unscathed by pollution and the sun. When it comes to consistency, it's slightly too oily for me but it feels and looks absolutely fine. It's very smooth and easy to apply. It plays well with makeup and only pills when you apply too much. Avoid getting too much on your eyebrows, it leaves a white cast. There's a lot to be said about a cream that bullet-proofs your skin, so this is recommended, indeed; the Matrix Support is available to buy here
